Read the Zoo
Read the Zoo is a science-based reading incentive program presented by the Indianapolis Zoological Society and the Indianapolis Star. This partnership is designed to encourage kindergarten through third grade students to explore non-fiction books and weekly newspaper articles in the Indianapolis Star while using newly acquired listening or reading skills. Incentives will be awarded at intervals throughout the twenty weeks to further encourage children to read and learn about animals. Read the Zoo is part of the Indianapolis Star's "Newspapers In Education" program. Schools, libraries and home schoolers will want to ve nture into this program of fun and fact filled reading.
We would like to thank all of the participants from the 2009 school year. Click here to see the animals that will be studied in 2010!
Teachers may register their students for Read the Zoo by calling the educational services office of the Indianapolis Star at (317) 444-4431 or (800) 633-9431. Registered classes receive special incentives such as bookmarks, key chains and pencils. Teachers also receive specially produced "collector's cards" on each of the featured animals in the series. Throughout the program, the Tuesday edition of the Indianapolis Star features a profile of a Zoo animal. Photographs of the animals and facts about their characteristics, behaviors, and habitats are highlighted. A listing of non-fiction books also appears, and readers can visit branches of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library to find the books. Articles are also posted on the Indianapolis Star's web site.
"Read the Zoo" represents the Indianapolis Zoo's dedication to providing recreational learning experiences for its audiences in order to connect animals, plants and people.
