I Dream of Africa: Elephants, That Is

Join the Indianapolis Zoological Society on a journey of discovery and adventure as we explore the fascinating world of the African elephant, the world's largest land mammal. The Indianapolis Zoo is proud of their special baby elephants Ajani, Kedar and Zahara, three of the first four African elephants in the world conceived and born through artificial insemination. Learn how these babies (calves) are nurtured by their mothers and by other female members of their herd.

Here you'll learn about a global plan to preserve the African elephant in zoos and around the world, plus research on elephant populations in Kenya and Tanzania being conducted by renowned elephant researcher Iain Douglas Hamilton, along with the artificial insemination program at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Teachers can provide an educational experience for their students by utilizing the elephant curriculum below and its companion kit of activities and resources provided by the Indianapolis Zoo. Activities provided are aligned to National Science Education Standards (National Research Council) and Indiana Academic Standards. This educational experience should include a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo. While at the Zoo, students can observe the elephants and will have the opportunity to undertake authentic research and compile data on the remarkable behavior of the elephants. All of these activities are planned to help everyone learn and understand the needs of the elephant so we might help ensure that this magnificent creature has a permanent place on our planet.
