at White River Gardens

Citizens Energy Group logoWhite River Gardens' most popular show, Butterflies presented by Citizens Energy Group, arrives at White River Gardens at the Indianapolis Zoo just in time for spring break! During this show, which runs from March 20 to September 7, 2010, the Hilbert Conservatory fills with delicate, free-flying butterflies.  Butterfly pupae arrive during the first week of March. The population increases steadily from several hundred at the beginning of the show to as many as 1,000 butterflies, as more and more hatch out through the summer.

Butterfly-Kathleen CavalleroThe display includes a combination of native American species plus exotic butterflies from Africa and Central America. The Conservatory is filled with colorful flowers and plants that attract the butterflies (and a few species of moths, as well!), plus educational materials on the lives of these beautiful and delicate creatuers.  Be sure to check out the hanging flower baskets on the mezzanine level - these are favorite haunts of the zebra longwing and Julia varieties. The “Butterflies” show is free for members and included with regular admission.
