Baby Elephant Update - May 5, 2006

Elephants Kedar & Kubwa2 3-06Kedar continues to grow very quickly, and he is now close to 600 pounds!   His newest behavior is playing with his "aunties," Sophi and Tombi, although he is still quick to run back to momma at the slightest unfamiliar sound. He als is still having a great time playing with his toys, especially his big rubber balls, and throwing himself around during his daily morning bath.  He has gotten really good at using his trunk, which he utilizes to explore everything (and everybody) around him.  He is still nursing steadily from mom Kubwa, but is taking in a bit of hay.  The trainers have offered him a few bites of cut-up apple and sweet potato pieces, and while he shows some interest by gumming them around his mouth, he mostly spits them out. On most days, now that the weather has warmed up for the season, Kedar will be out in the bull yard (that's the smaller of the two yards on the left) late morning into lunch, then out again in the cow yard (that's the one with the waterfall) during most of the afternoon.  Stop by - he's loves visitors!
