Conservation Education Internships

Distance Learning-Vet HospInterns can explore the exciting field of Conservation Education where enthusiasm for learning and teaching really shines through.  Interns have the opportunity to develop or further skills in public speaking and interaction while engaging a diverse audience. Internships are offered in four areas: Distance Learning, www.mycarbonpledge.com website content, Programs (classroom setting), and Visitor Programs (on-grounds).

Distance Learning Interns - As one of the first zoos in the country to offer two-way interactive video adventures, the Indianapolis Zoo connects with students across Indiana and throughout the United States.  Students learn about the Earth, the environment, and the wonderful range of creatures that share it during each of these video adventures.  We expand their classroom walls beyond their community.  The Distance Learning Intern will work with the Outreach Specialist and Zoo instructors to determine what footage is needed, videotaping footage of animals in our collection with the help of collections staff, videotaping exhibits for backgrounds in distance learning programs, possibly videotaping interviews with collections staff, some scripting, editing short packages that can be used in programs, and delivering the final packages in such a way that they can be accessed via our distance learning laptop.

www.mycarbonpledge.com Intern - Participate in the Zoo's online conservation initiative.  Work closely with our Outreach Specialist to update content on the site, communicate with bloggers, assist with writing content for the site, and help with site promotions.  Looking for New Media or Journalism Majors and/or experience with website content management and strong writing skills.  Available Summer 2010 Only!

Overnight kids w-bagsProgram Interns - will participate in sub-departments of the Zoo Education Department.  Assist our professional educators in classroom preparation, student supervision, curriculum development and you may even try your hand at teaching!  These opportunities may include Education workshops and School programs, Zoo Camp, Nocturnal Adventures, and Distance Learning Programs.

V-Intern - Naturalist SupervisorsVisitor Program Interns - This position focuses on how to interpret Zoo animals and environments as well as leadership and supervision of teens and adults in the Naturalist Program, the Zoo’s on-grounds interpretation program.  Naturalists use animal artifacts (skulls, teeth, pelts,...) in front of animal exhibits and at Naturalist Stations throughout Zoo grounds to interact with and educate visitors.  If you really want to learn a lot about animals, this is one of the most learning intensive and leadership based internships offered.  This one is sure to challenge!

Internships are also offered for the Summer (May-August) and Fall (September-December) sessions.   Typically, Interns schedules can be flexible, offering work sessions approximately 20 hours per week from a 12 week minimum commitment. Intern positions are experience based and are therefore unpaid.  Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the Intern.
