Christmas at the Zoo
December 4-30
(closed Christmas Eve and Day)

CATZ08-lightsThe holidays are well underway at the Indianapolis Zoo! Christmas at the Zoo is celebrated December 4-30 from 5-9pm, closed for Christmas Eve and Day. The Zoo opens at noon, with full Christmas at the Zoo activities begining at 5pm.  Zoo members are admitted free to this event, and non-member tickets are $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for seniors 62+ and children 2-12. Children one and under are free, and parking is $5.00. For information on group tickets, call Donna at (317) 630-2014.

Christmas at the Zoo is a truly amazing time to visit the Zoo!  As dusk falls, the Zoo becomes peaceful amid the soft Christmas lights. It’s also a great time of year to see the animals that love the cooler weather. The seals, sea lions, polar bears, walrus, tigers, and bears love the cooler temperatures. All the indoor exhibits are open and are spaced out perfectly to go from building to building around the Zoo - Oceans presented by Old National Bank, Dolphin, Deserts, and Critter Corner presented by ARAB.

While at the Zoo, be sure you include the holiday activities. At Santa's Village presented by Community Health Network, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus (until December 23), put a wish or blessing on the tree, decorate a cookie and write a letter to Santa. Also stop in Santa's Sweet Shop (located in the Outpost) for homemade and gourmet eats! Along the way, sing along with the carolers and local school choirs, and get aboard the Holiday Train Ride. The animals and keepers will also be out to host special chats and the Holiday Dolphin Show.

Polar Express 4-D SantaNew this year!  The simulator will feature an extraordinary 4D adventure this holiday season! THE  POLAR EXPRESS™ tells the story of a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, where he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. The Polar Express™ 4D Experience is based on the film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment, inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved Caldecott Medal children's book, and includes 3D and 4D effects that will make a believer out of just about anyone. The running time is approximately 20 minutes. For this very special film, visitors should pick up timed tickets at the ticket booth, and admission requires three tickets. All other rides (weather dependent) require the usual number of tickets. 3D and 4D Rides at the Indianapolis Zoo are presented by AT&T Real Yellow Pages.

Also new this year!  At White River Gardens, the Hilbert Conservatory will be decked out with a whole new show to enjCATZ-Biome treeoy - Woodland Wonderland presented by Community Health Network, featuring decorations from nature. See fanciful animal critters, evergreens, holiday plants, snowflakes, an animated light show, scavenger hunt, and through December 23 from 5-9pm,  real reindeer!  Also in the Gardens, visit the Christmas Shoppe featuring specialty animal themed gifts and ornaments. Special thanks to Community Health Network for sponsoring the holiday event at White River Gardens and Santa's Village at the Zoo!

And special thanks goes to Scott A. Jones, Founder & CEO of Carmel based ChaCha Search, Inc. (www.ChaCha.com) who provided additional specialty lighting effects created by Galaxia, Inc., (www.GalaxiaLighting.com).  Look for the two large video boards out front, with the flowing water fountain and the signature tree.

This year’s event will be even brighter as we continue to change out the lights in our thousands of trees and hundreds of displays to the LED equivalent. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) offer a brighter light, last longer, and use far less power than a typical strand of lights. In comparison, a regular strand of 50 lights uses 300 watts an hour, while an LED strand uses only 4 watts an hour. Now, multiply the difference by 4 hours, 25 days, and tons of strands – wow!  What a difference a strand can make.

Dolphin In-Water - Jodie niece2Look for the Mistletoe!  As a final new and special treat, look for mistletoe on grounds from your chance to win!  Find one or all ten, then list the places you find them in the Zoo Store to register to win a Dolphin In-Water Adventure!

The Zoo will open at noon, so come out early and watch what happens as dusk begins to set. After 40 years, Christmas at the Zoo continues to be a tradition for families, friends, and children each holiday season.
