What's Blooming Now - July 2, 2012
Despite the heat and drought, and thanks to the outstanding and tireless efforts of the Zoo's wonderful horticulture staff, you can still see plenty of gorgeous blooms in White River Gardens. Here’s a quick overview:
POLLY HORTON HIX DESIGN GARDENS The Form and Texture Garden is a riot of flowers!
Scabiosa ‘Ace of Spades’ is an unusual black-flowered annual you will find in the Discovery and Blended gardens.
The Cutting garden has plants like Echinacea ‘Coconut Lime’ and this narrow leaved Coleus, all ready to go in a vase.
ALLEN CLOWES WATER GARDENS The beds around the pools are starting to look great with the pinks and greens of Penisetum 'Fireworks', Angelonia 'Zebra' and Zinnia 'Lime Queen,' backed here by the foliage of buttercup squash.
VIRGINIA FAIRBANKS SUN GARDEN Everyone’s favorite Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) is joined by lavender Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), and the fading red flowers of Monarda ‘Jacob Kline’.
In a pot on the stream pool plaza you’ll be stunned by the flaming pink bracts (modified leaves) of Bougainvillea. Then turn around to the pool itself to see the gorgeous water lilies (and maybe a frog or turtle, if you’re lucky!).
