Ivory became the second
African elephant in history to successfully conceive and give birth via
artificial insemination for a second time when this little female calf hit
the ground running on August 31, 2006. Zahara, whose name was chosen in a
Name the Baby Contest with the Indianapolis Star and WTHR-TV, came just a
few weeks early after a 22-month gestation. Active and alert, the little
female appears to be advanced for her age, and she was the heaviest at birth
of the four calves born at the Indianapolis Zoo since 2000, weighing in at
266 pounds at birth. Zahara is now an active adolescent elephant and she
enjoys discovering the world around her.
