Seasonal Conservation Educator
Advancing
animal conservation is an integral part of the Zoo's mission. Working as
part of the staff at the
Hix Institute, the seasonal conservation educator will
play a role in helping the Zoo accomplish that mission.
Job duties
The conservation educator will
oversee or facilitate various conservation programs for the conservation
education department. This will include (but not be limited to): monitoring the shark touch tank, facilitating interactions with invertebrate program
animals, teaching Zoo overnights and assisting with other conservation
education initiatives as assigned. This is a seasonal (20-40 hours per week)
position that runs April through September.
This position will require some shifts on weekends, evenings and
holidays. Additionally, the conservation educator will be
required to
work outside, in all kinds of weather conditions; have the
physical stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will
possess:

Extraordinary aptitude for dealing with people.
• Formal or informal educational institution experience preferred.
•
A commitment to conservation.
•
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure in a
public setting.
•
Excellent public speaking skills.
•
Past experience in formal or informal education settings.
•
Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
•
Excellent oral communication skills and writing ability.
•
Ability to multi-task; handle stressful situations and meet deadlines in a
fast paced environment.
•
Intermediate user of Outlook, Word, and database programs.
•
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
•
Ability to assess situations, use good procedure/judgment and follow
through.
•
A high school diploma/GED
is required; post-secondary education preferred.
