Great Apes Keeper
In less than a year, the Indianapolis Zoo will open the
Orangutan Center, an innovative, state-of-the-art facility that’s being
called one of the best zoo exhibits in the world.
To support this exhibit, additional Zookeeper staff is needed to work
directly with orangutans. We are beginning our search for experienced
full-time animal keepers to work with great apes. Keeper level (assistant
keeper, keeper, senior keeper) is determined upon applicant’s experience
• Experience or interest in training animals is
necessary as this person will be integrated into the training team which is
involved with primates.
Create and/or implement behavioral enrichment techniques.
Teach new behaviors as directed.
May assist with exhibit modification.
Work as part of a small, cohesive team, and must also be able to
function and make positive contributions as a team member.
• Interact with visitors, including during season keeper chats and media
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or
university in life sciences, zoo keeping, animal psychology or similar,
related field is strongly preferred. High school/GED may be accepted
provided the candidate has a minimum of 10 years of directly related work
experience at an AZA accredited zoo or similar animal conservation
A minimum of two years of professional work experience with direct knowledge
of similar or related type work with great apes, particularly orangutans, is
Willingness to develop relationships with great apes by treating them as
