The Indianapolis Zoo, with the addition of the International Orangutan
Center opening in 2014, is a world-class facility, and the Director of
Facilities plays an integral role in maintaining that status. The primary
focus of this position is to keep up the Zoo’s physical structures,
equipment and infrastructure through focus on preventative maintenance, as
well as repair and replacement programs. The director provides leadership to
the Facilities, Life Support (Aquatic Engineering) and Energy Management
teams. The position requires broad knowledge and experience in project
management, general trades, preventative maintenance programs and asset
Directs annual projects for Facilities, Life Support and Energy Management,
which includes partnering with the Director of Finance on matters pertaining
to materials and equipment procurement, competitive bidding of contracted
work and contract development.
Organizes, catalogs, and maintains site and building plans. Also is
responsible for the Facilities asset management program, which includes
keeping records and warranties of equipment and buildings; establishing and
maintaining an accurate and constantly changing record of
Facilities/Maintenance inventory and operating equipment; and working
closely with the Director of Safety & Security.
Works closely with the Safety Manager and Director of Safety & Security on
matters relating to safety, appearance of facilities, and park operations as
it pertains to Facilities Maintenance, Life Support and Energy Management.
This duty includes assuring compliance with inspectors (including but not
limited to rides inspectors, USDA, OSHA, and other regulatory associations
including underground storage tanks, etc.), as well as attending and
participating in safety committee meetings.
Acts in a manner to promote safety and accident prevention during all

at the Zoo and other special events as needed. Works with Vice President of
Infrastructure and Construction to ensure readiness of events while
suggesting improvements and enhancements.
Manages the Zoo’s Energy Management System. Ensures emergency readiness as
it relates to Facilities Management, Life Support and Energy Management.
Responsible for the annual operations budget and business plan for
Facilities Management, Life Support and Energy Management. This duty
includes its initial preparation and constant monitoring throughout the
calendar year and assisting with the development of the annual capital
budget. Also is responsible for reviewing and approving requests for
appropriate supplies and services for the Zoo and Gardens within the limits
of the authorized budget and in accordance with IZS purchasing procedures.
Develops long range strategies including the development of the annual

occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human blood borne pathogens.
• Experience with Honeywell systems is a plus.
• While a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in
project management, construction management or a related field is preferred,
a high school diploma or GED is minimally acceptable in combination with
extensive professional experience.
• A minimum of seven years of professional work experience in facilities
management, construction management, or a related field is required. The
successful candidate will have a minimum of five years supervising direct
reports and will have proven ability in successfully directing and managing
• The director must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Indiana driver’s
license and be insurable by the Zoo’s insurance carrier.
• Must be an advanced and competent user of
Outlook, Work Order, and Word. Must be an intermediate user of Excel, Power
Point, Project and Honeywell station.
• Working familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and
possesses mechanical aptitude.
• Understanding of motor and small engine repair helpful. Engineering
background is a plus. Must be
able to read blueprints.
