As we always say at the Cheetah: Race for Survival exhibit, the cheetah is the fastest animal on land. But is it the fastest animal, period? Check out these speeds - how many did you know?
Fastest animal on land is the cheetah — It can run 70 miles per hour.
Fastest insect is the hawk moth — It flies at 33 miles per hour.
Fastest bird on land is the ostrich — It can run 43 miles per hour.
Fastest reptile is the spiny-tailed iguana — It can reach 21 miles per hour.
Fastest dog is the greyhound — It can run 43 miles per hour.
Fastest animal in water is the sailfish — It swims at 70 miles per hour (imagine a fish that swims as fast as a cheetah runs!).
Fastest bird in the air is the swift — It can fly at 106 miles per hour. But, the Peregrine falcon averages 25-34 mph in traveling flight, reaching speeds up to 69 mph in direct pursuit of prey, and can dive even faster – an impressive 242 mph – and can easily catch the swift.
By comparison, the current fastest human (Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt) tops out at 27.45 mph.
